Beta Lactam Antibiotics, their Mechanism of Actions, Uses and Side Effects

There are different categories of an antibiotics exists, beta-lactam antibiotics are one of them, β-lactam antibiotics are the antibiotics belongs to broad spectrum antibiotics.
All the antibiotics which belongs to beta-lactam antibiotics have a common ring in molecular structures known as beta-lactam ring. 
β-lactam antibiotics basically includes the penams - having thiazolidine rings (penicillin derivatives), Carbapenems- having pyrrole ring, monobactams and cephems- having thiazine ring (cephalosporins).

Mechanism of Action of Beta-lactam antibiotics

All the antibiotics containing β-lactam ring worked by inhibition of biosysnthesis of cell wall present in bacteria that results in death of the bacteria.

When to take beta-lactam antibiotics?

These antibiotics are taken when we face ant of the following infectious conditions:

  • Lyme disease
  • Thyphoid fever
  • Joint infections
  • Cystitis
  • Pyelonephritis
  • Pneumonia
  • Bronchitis
  • Sterptococcal tonsillitis

Side effects of beta-lactam antibiotics

β-lactam antibiotics have some side effects also. Patients who are on antibiotic medication can face following adverse effects:

  • Diarrhoea
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Skin rash
  • Dizziness
  • Some times convulsions

Precautions to be taken while taking beta-lactam antibiotics


  • Special care is required while administrating this antibiotics in the patients having renal impairment, skin reactions or hypersensitivity reactions as well as convulsions.
  • Also do not exceed your dose or miss your dose as prescribed by your doctor.
  • Immediate contact to your doctor if you are facing any problem while taking this medication.
